According to artist and creator, Silvana Benacchio:  ‘Pottery is slow art, an immersion of the senses and self. It is reminiscent of age old artisans working their craft, honing their skills over a long period of time. Labouring with both love and frustration at the unformed yet evolving vision; seeing it through its stages from inception to birth; never really quite sure of the outcome; being lead by the medium and muse.  It sounds quite romantic however that is the adventure of creating. Taking risks while being compelled by the impetus of the heart.
Exhibitors include: Lyn Baines, Silvana Benacchio, Judith Bennett, Karen Branchflower, Storm Bucek, Wendy Butler, Connie Cook, Marj Cornell, Geordie Cutler, Jennifer Edwards, Heather Gowan, Gayle Langford, Astrid Lempriere, Donna Loney, Peter Ries, Robyn Sadler, Georgina Scarborough, Frank Vella, Kay Weltz and Heather Young.

Seeing Light & Shade – an exhibition of works based on the theory of Max Meldrum
11 March – 16 April 2023
Picture
The Queenscliff Neighbourhood House Gallery’s Seeing Light & Shade exhibition opening on  11 March – 16 April 2023, represents works by five tonal painters based on the theory of Max Meldrum (1875-1955) and inspired by their teacher, Ryan Brearley.  Artists include: Chris Bubb, Tess Clementson, Sue Hunt, David Jarman and Merridy Witkowski.

Tonal practice is distinguished by careful optical analysis of tone, value and hue rather than colour. In Meldrum’s vein, drawings in the exhibition exploit a full range of the Venetian scale of greys to capture subtleties of light and shade. Similarly, oil paintings here relied on a limited palette of just six colours; with gentle forms; ´lost edges’ and contrasts heightened by ‘chasing darks’.  The style documents only what can be seen by the artist’s eye - rather than being distracted, tricked or over-worked by what the artist’s mind perceives should be represented in a landscape, still life or portrait.

The works echo the recent resurgence of interest in tonal art seen recently at the exhibition of Meldrum and his followers’ work at the Art Gallery of Ballarat (2022) and Clarice Beckett, (Art Gallery of South Australia) in 2021 and (Geelong Gallery), scheduled for April-July 2023.

23 January - 5 March

The beauty of nature and richness of the Bellarine Peninsula’s coastline is the inspiration for artist Lea Duffy’s Coastal Muse exhibition, to be held at the Queenscliff Neighbourhood House Gallery, from 23 January to 5 March 2023.
According to Lea, she is: ‘drawn to the vibrancy of colour and texture and mesmerized by the blends and shading that can be created using fluid art and mixed media.
‘Creating my artwork brings me a deep sense of peace and calm, it’s a magical place to escape the world while getting swept up in the process of creation.
‘My aim is to create beautiful abstract art that is open to individual interpretation. I’m continually exploring new concepts and techniques. With each piece my intention is to bring joy, peace and tranquillity to those who are drawn to it’.
Lea Duffy resides on the Bellarine Peninsula and this is her first exhibition at the Queenscliff Neighbourhood House Gallery, where she will be showcasing mixed media works.
Coastal Muse runs from 23 January – 5 March 2023
At The Queenscliff Neighbourhood House Gallery
3 Tobin Drive, Queenscliff
